On her visit to Chimneys, Miss Marple attends a gathering hosted for Austrian Count, Ludwig Stainach. Ludwig takes a personal interest in Chimneys and a deal is drawn up. Soon Ludwig is shot dead and a coded message is retrieved from his pocket.

Miss Marple accompanies Lady Virginia Revel, daughter of her late cousin, to a weekend party at her family home of Chimneys, where her father is hosting a gathering for an important Austrian Count, Ludwig Von Stainach. But in the middle of the night, the sound of a gunshot is heard from a secret passageway in the house and Count Ludwig is found dead in the arms of Anthony Cade, Virginia's lover. Miss Marple begins to realise that the secret of Chimneys is darker than she had realised.
