Poirot's services are solicited by Deauville resident Paul Renauld, who claims he is being defrauded by Chileans. When Poirot reaches his residence, he gets the news that Renauld has been abducted, and his wife is left bound and gagged in the bedroom.

When Poirot visits French seaside resort Deauville, Paul Renauld reaches out to him for help. The next day, when Poirot gets to Paul's place to look into the matter, he finds out that he has been kidnapped.
