England won the toss and elected to field first on an overcast Day 1 of the 4th Test at The Oval. The hosts picked up where they left off in the previous test, taking out India's top-order cheaply. Virat Kohli fought back with his second consecutive fifty of the series before Shardul Thakur played an aggressive knock of 57 off just 36 deliveries. Chris Woakes marked his return in style, picking up four wickets to limit India's first innings tally to 191. The visitors made up for their under-par total as Jasprit Bumrah and Umesh Yadav bowled fantastic spells to send the English top-order batters packing including the man in-form Joe Root as they stood 53/3 at stumps, trailing by 138 runs.
