England carried forward the momentum from a monumental Day 1 performance at Headingly and made good use of the flat pitch to take their tally to 423/8, leading India by 345 runs at stumps. Unfazed by the early departures of Rory Burns and Haseeb Hameed, Joe Root and Dawid Malan marched the hosts ahead with some exceptional batting displays. Malan marked his return with a delightful half-century alongside his captain as the two put together 139 runs for the third wicket. Root went on to score his second century of the series, scoring a magnificent 121. India managed to soften the blows by picking up wickets in regular intervals during the second half of the day through Mohammed Shami and Ravindra Jadeja to keep themselves in the game with three more days to go.
