Sri Lanka won the toss and opted to bat first yet again as their openers Avishka Fernando and Vinod Bhanuka formed a formidable 77-run partnership for the first wicket, before Yuzvendra Chahal picked up back-to-back wickets to help India get the upper hand. Thanks to Charith Asalanka's maiden half-century and another important knock from Chamika Karunaratne, the Lankans managed to put up 275/9 on the board at the end of 50 overs, as both Chahal and Bhuvneshwar Kumar were the pick of the bowlers with 3 wickets each.
