Daryl Mitchell and Tom Blundell put on a show for the visitors as they dominated the day and finished with 318/4 at stumps of Day 1. New Zealand started positively with a 50-run stand between the openers, but England struck twice in consecutive overs to remove them. Then came Devon Conway and Henry Nicholls, who got good starts but couldn't convert it into a big one. James Anderson and Ben Stokes scalped two wickets each and left New Zealand reeling at 169/4 before Mitchell and Blundell saved the day for the visitors.
