Villarreal took a shock 2-0 lead at half-time through goals from Boulaye Dia and Francis Coquelin. Liverpool came out of their traps after the break and responded through Fabinho before goals from substitute Luis Diaz and Sadio Mane turned the tie on its head. Five minutes from full-time, Etienne Capoue was sent off for two bookable offences as Liverpool won the away tie 3-2 and cruised into the finals with a 5-2 aggregate scoreline.
